Decking: Mount Waverley

Hardwood, Softwood, or Composite Decking?

Before you can begin building your new deck, there are a few questions you need to consider when selecting the best timber to be used. What is your budget? How much maintenance would you like? What climate will your deck experience? The answer to these questions will aid you in selecting the best timber type for your deck, usually broken down into three main groups - hardwood, softwood, or composite. What is the difference?

Hardwood: is extremely durable as the name implies, highly resilient, and can look, feel, and even smell great. Hardwood generally has a much higher level of density in comparison to softwood, which can make installation a little tricky, however the result is usually well worth it. Hardwood comes in a wide variety of colours to suit your Australian home, and with a little maintenance over the years, is a great timber choice for your deck.

Softwood: is usually cheaper, very versatile, and much easier to work with in comparison to hardwood (great for DIY projects). When treated correctly, softwood decks can be very resistant to harsh weather conditions, rotting and termites. Softwood can also be stained in nearly any colour, allowing you to achieve your desired look.

Composite: is an environmentally friendly alternative to timber, made from a mix of wood fibres and recycled plastic. Available in lots of different colours and textures, composite decking is extremely durable and requires low maintenance. Although more expensive, composite decking is less likely to fade, warp or rot in comparison.
